Engagement Pictures - Sneaky Peeky

To all my friends who are braving this crazy Sandy storm - you are in my thoughts & prayers! Stay safe! (If you can even read this because you might be without power).

I have a special little treat for you today! (Really it's a special treat for me, but hopefully you will enjoy it too.) If you have been following The Pink Growl for any length of time now you know that almost 9 weeks ago we had our engagement pictures taken. I have been waiting...not so patiently...to see these babies. I had to beg and plead with Skye just to have them done. I was probably more excited about these pictures than just about any other detail in wedding planning, thus far. You can see our three original sneak peek photos here. Of those three: I loved one, liked one and thought I looked fat in one. My photographer posted a Sneak Peek engagement album of 20 pictures on Facebook last night, and I'm waiting to get the actual disk from her with 100 pictures. I am on the fence with some of them that she posted, so I'm hoping there are more on the disk that I love. I want to be blown away by them and I want them to bring tears to my eyes. The pictures are the most important thing to me because that's basically all we will have to look back on.

Here's your sneaky peeky of my favs! I will show you more when I get the disc in the mail. What do you think?? Be honest!

Labor Day Weekend Lessons Learned

I wanted to share with you a few lessons that I learned over the rainy labor day weekend:

1. Car wrecks suck! See a picture of my poor wrecked car here. I'm feeling much better today and my soreness is starting to fade away, but I miss my car! I should find out today or tomorrow whether they are going to total it or try and fix it. I'll keep you posted! I am very thankful for all your sweet comments the other day - luckily, the only damages were to cars and not to bodies.

2. Nothing makes you feel better when you're gloomy over a smooshed car than this little face! A close 2nd would be watching the #retroMTV The Hills marathon allllll weekend long. I forgot how much I loved that show!

3. I can't find the pandemonium book anywhere! I looked all over Knoxville this weekend. Guess I will have to order it on Amazon. I'm ready to find out what happens next. It was a rainy Labor Day weekend - thanks to Hurricane Issac - so no lake time. It would have been the perfect time for me to hibernate with a book.

4. I hate veils! I went on my first outing to try on wedding dresses yesterday. I was worried about it because I typically am not a big fan of trying on lots of clothes. I get frustrated easily when things don't look the way I want them to. However, I had a blast and I felt so pretty! I brought my MOH, aunt, cousin, soon to be mother-in-law and step mom with me. It was like playing dress up! I found 3 gorgeous dresses, but since it was my first time I wanted to check out a few other shops before choosing a winner. But lesson learned: veils are not my style! They remind me of creepy corpse brides - weird, I know!

5. The life of a cop's wife during football season will frustrate me to no end. I try not to complain very much about Skye's work schedule. We are so blessed that has a job that he loves and I'm so proud of him for the work he does. BUTTTTT...I do get a little pissy when I have to spend holidays alone and HE'S NOT OFF FOR ANY UT FOOTBALL GAMES THIS YEAR! I could die. I know that's so stupid and minor, but it's the way I feel so there. Grrrr!

Let's get excited for a 4 day work week! WOOT WOOT!

Oh, How Pinteresting!

I see everyone's posts when they link up every Wednesday with The Vintage Apple, and lately I've been a Pinterest beast just trying to gather my thoughts for wedding ideas. (Sorry if you follow me and you're annoyed with all the wedding crap!) I've never linked up for this one before, but I thought this would be the perfect time to show you some of my ideas. I can't say enough that wedding planning is so fun! Aside from the whole choosing the venue part, which so far I have been unable to do. I just can't decide!
Our colors are going to be bright purple & grey-

I pretty much love everything about this - our guys will even have similar attire with the grey suits. I have looked at a couple venues that even look similar.

Who Do Ya Love Wednesday - Guest Blogger #6 Ashley

I can't believe that today is my last guest blogger in this 6 week series - where in the world has the time gone??? I've had the pleasure of introducing you to some of my very favorite girls in this bloggy world. Today is no different. I found Ashley - aka 5ohWifey - very early on in my blogging career. At the time Skye was still in the police academy and I wasn't quite sure just how much my life was about to change. I remember on my very first go 'round with evening shift (2:00pm -11:30pm), I was lucky enough to stumble on 5ohWifey, and it just made my night! My very favorite thing about blogging is connecting with other strong women, like myself. Ashley is the best representation of a cop's wife that I can imagine! I truly find solace when I read her posts and I know that even though she's across the country from me, she would be there for me if I needed her and more importantly, she understands my struggles. These friendships we make are priceless!

Okay enough mushy stuff - Here's Ashley -
Hey you lovely Pink Growl readers! My name is Ashley and I blog over at 5ohWifey: life as a mommy and cop's wife. I am really excited that Nikki asked me to share a little bit over here today!
First and foremost, a little about me. I am amazed every day by what God is doing in my life. I am a southern girl now living in California against my will. I am the wife of 5ohHubby who is a police officer and wonderful man and no that's not mutually exclusive. I am a stay at home mom to an amazing little girl I call 5ohBaby and she is my whole world. We have probably the cutest, ugly dog out there (5ohPup).

I try to blog about what I know. I try to keep it as real as possible. I blog about everything from holding on tight to my little one to the time I accidentally fed her jalapenos. I love to cook and even make my own baby food. Sometimes I get a little crafty and dabble in fashion posts. I always say that I want my blog to be a place where we can laugh together, cry together, and just be real with one another.
My favorite thing to write about is being married to a police officer. I write about both the joys and the stresses of being in a police marriage. It takes up 99.99% of my life so it's what I know. I don't want to act like 5ohHubby and I have it all together, even if I do write him love notes. We still have fights, just like another other couple. I like to pretend that I'm basically the best housekeeper in the world but we all know that's not true.

Exhibit A
I never want to do the laundry. Ever.
One of the many imperfect things in our marriage is the crazy shift work. As the wife of a police officer I had to get used to sleeping alone, attending weekend events by myself, and scheduling my life, and 5ohBaby's life, around 5ohHubby's schedule. Being married to a police officer is challenging, to say the least. So what do I do?

Well first and foremost I'm a part of a group that helps me to understand him and his job. I read articles about things like police marriage and domestic failure, how to have happy police marriages, and police PTSD.
I make sure that even when my husband is tired we keep God central in our lives through church and small groups. If you can not go to both because of shift hours, i suggest going to at least one or the other. And just because your husband can't make it, doesn't mean you cant. I see a dramatic difference in our marriage when we are regularly involved spiritually with one another.
I read books like Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement by Dr. Kevin Gilmartin and I Love A Cop by Dr Ellen Kirschman.
I personally have sat in on seminars by Dr. Gilmartin, Dr. Kirschman and many other events that are pro-marriage that have come around. Both Dr. Gilmartin and Dr. Kirschman do traveling speaking engagements so you can look them up. Now, granted, 5ohHubby doesn't have problems at work, hasn't been involved in a shooting, and is fairly new to the force (about 3 years). But that doesn't mean these books and articles don't apply to us. We soak up all the knowledge like sponges and try to learn from what has worked and hasn't worked for other officers.

We take preventative measures. Sure, 5ohHubby and I like a good glass or two of wine every now and again, but he never drinks to come down after work. Never. Sure, he in no way relies on alcohol now but many first responders do, and we don't want that to happen to us. We looked and looked for a small group that fit us but couldn't be a part of the couple small group at church because of his shift. We tried out an older couple small group but just didn't relate. We tried out a small group based on our age but realized we really just needed a small group of couples our age. So we started one. We realized we were zoning out on TV after 5ohBaby went to bed so we... well, we still haven't done anything about that. But we're a work in progress.

I'm not saying we are perfect. Far from it. What I am saying it is important to know that it can happen to you just as quickly as it happens to someone else. That little things you deal with now are the things that become huge in the end. That marriage takes work and doesn't just happen.

I have TONS of resources, so if you are having trouble, whether your spouse agrees or not, or if you'd just like to delve a little deeper, feel free to contact me via email 5ohwifey[at]gmail[dot]com or come over to the blog and leave me a comment. I love my husband and I love his job (and he looooooooves his job). I want to do everything I can to continue to support him-- and also to support other wives out there!

Isn't she great?? I know that a lot of my bloggy friends are police, fire, EMS or military wives so we can all relate to this on some level. Even if your husband has a job with a crazy schedule, like my guest blogger #4 Kara - we can all find ways to relate to each other and help each other out.

THANK YOU ALL SOOOOO MUCH FOR SUPPORTING THIS 6 WEEK SERIES - WHO DO YA LOVE WEDNESDAYS! I hope you've made some new friends in your Google Reader, and maybe we can revive this series again at a later date!

The Countdowns are ON!

I have a couple of countdowns going on right now that I want to share with you! December is always a busy time of the year with holiday parties and events, plus you have to squeeze in shopping and family Christmas time. Our anniversary is December 15th so that usually gets breezed over because it's so close to Christmas - note to self don't make your wedding day this close to Christmas when we finally decide to make it official!

3 WEEKS Until Skye's Graduation from the Police Academy!! We've been going at this stressful academy since July so I am relieved (as I'm sure he is too) to see the end in sight!

13 work days until I get 2 days off - to celebrate Skye's Graduation!

13 work days until mine and Skye's 7 year anniversary! Same day as his Graduation. May he be showered with gifts and love that week! Love his little heart for putting up with me for so long..maybe after the 7 year itch comes getting hitched???

THEN, only 4 days in the following work week because that's the week of Christmas!

We actually attended a sweet little wedding over the weekend. I love weddings! There's so much joy that occurs on a wedding day, it's so contagious. I guess I should say, I love receptions. I've only been to a few actual wedding ceremonies that I enjoyed, the receptions are the fun part. The bride put together the absolute cutest little table gifts too. It was a country style wedding, held in a barn type setting. You've seen the kind where the bridesmaids wear cowboy boots. Complete with Natty Light beer and cornhole! It felt very casual and comfortable. Usually the overdone country theme is not my style, but I really enjoyed and fell in love with this one. So fittingly enough, the table gifts were little horse shoes with a tag attached. I loved that idea of offering good luck with the horse shoes to all your guests. Here's a pic -

I wanted to show you my cute new dress and new sparkly gold eyeshadow that I showcased that evening, but of course I didn't get any full length dress pics and this picture makes me look super pale. Here's a small glimpse of my cute dress and new eyeshadow- I swear it looked better in person!

The bride and groom are both a quiet and reserved pair, so I was pleasantly surprised when their reception was a blast! And I continued the Thanksgiving weekend tradition of stuffing my face as I had 3 pieces of wedding cake! THREE! I'll be visiting my friend, Mr. Gym tonight to work that situation out.

I hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving holiday! Mine actually was ideal this year. This might be Skye's last Thanksgiving off for a while so I'm glad we decided to do it our way this year.

Where Were You?

My hot topic of the week is the 10th anniversary of 9/11 is on Sunday. I always am intrigued to hear people's stories about where they were on that fateful morning that 9/11 forever changed our world. I'm not sure why that interests me so, but it does for whatever reason. Here my September 11, 2001-2011 story.

First a little background...I come from a line of the most honorable civil serants. My papaw (dad's dad) was in the military in Korea when he was just a boy of 18 years old. He came home and joined the local police department. They had him start the same day he inquired about a job. From there, a family tradition was born. Papaw dedicated his life to his job and even met (and eventually got re-married to) my Gran Gran because she was a cop too. He retired 10 years ago from the police department with the ranking of Assistant Police Chief. My dad joined the police department when he was 23 years old ( I was 2 at the time), and has been a loyal ranking official for 24 years now. My baby brother, who is 21, has been a firefighter for over a year now. And now, my wonderful boyfriend of almost 7 years is currently in the police academy. Needless to say, I swell with pride when I get the chance to brag on these men in my life. They are brave and honorable and they lay their lives on the line every day. Even better, they are my family.

My 9/11 story is like many others, I'm sure. I was in the fall semester of my senior year in high school in 2001 (man, that makes me feel old!). We were in 1st block when the normal morning ammouncement came over the loud speaker. My teacher was not done talking for the day, so he silenced the announcements. The bell rings and class is dismissed. I walk out into a furious buzz of rumors in the high school hallway - usually a typical scene, but today the buzz is somber and scary. "There was an attack in New York at the World Trade Center? A plane crashed into a building by terrorists?" Confusion strangled me. I rushed to my next class where the TV was on CNN, and I began to soak in the story of what was happening. Here I am, a 16 year old girl in Clinton, TN watching the world unfold before my eyes. I remember rapid thoughts firing through my mind. My 17th birthday was less than a week away, and yet I wasn't sure if I would live to see that day. A mountain of uncertainty, a world of fear, and a stream of tears followed. Sitting in my 2nd block class, I was astonished to see (before my very eyes) yet another plane crash into the 2nd twin tower. I couldn't believe they were showing it on TV! I felt like I was watching a movie that was well beyond my years and should have been censored for my young eyes. I would consider myself a very patriotic person. Although I do not have any immediate family in the military; I STRONGLY support our troops and even had the brief notion to join the military myself before this debacle. I was terrified, overwhelmed, confused...the list goes on. I just kept wondering what was going to happen next? Lunch rolls around and by now I've seen the first twin tower crumble to ground like a Jenga game. My 3rd block class was showchoir with Mrs. Ingle. Of course, the TV in the classroom was on the news  so we could watch our worlds unfold minute by minute. She took a moment to mute the drama on the TV and encouraged us to sing our National Anthem. We sang this song for every football and basketball game at our school, so we knew our parts well. Most of us couldn't even make it through the song without crying. It was, and will always be to me, the most beatiful version of our National Anthem that I've ever heard. It felt so lathargic to sing those words, and feel a sense of national pride.

Fast forward to today, 3 days before the 10th anniversary of that ill fated day in American history. I am older (gag), wiser, but not stronger when it comes to this topic. Actually, I probably get more emotional these days when I tell my 9/11 story. I live in a town that is within mere miles of Oak Ridge, TN. For decades, Oak Ridge has thought to have been/still be a target for terrotist attacks due to the nuclear weapons facility and national lab that are housed there. What if the attack had been in Tennessee? In East TN? In Oak Ridge? What if my dad would have responded to an attack? Gosh, my tears are flowing now because that's a scary thought. God Bless NYFD and NYPD for their heroic efforts that day! God Bless all the firefighters and police officers around the country who fight each day to keep their towns safe! God Bless the troops that put themselves in the line of duty for me to have a free country! And God Bless my free country and all that it stands for!

I will now step down off my soapbox....until next week :)
