How to Fix Damaged Hair

In the summer my the ends of my hair get reeeeally tired of me bleaching them, ponytailing them, keeping them in the sun, etc. They start looking brittle and hay-like - not to mention frizzy. I have been using the Moroccan Argan Oil Penetrating Oil, which has helped. But I think maybe I am in desperate need of a deep conditioner! For about 2 weeks I have been using as little heat on my hair as I can possibly get away it. I'm only blowing it dry on weekdays when I have to work and letting it air dry on weekends. No flat iron or curling irons at all.

I apologize for the horrible quality of these pictures - they are with my iPhone. Plus, it's near impossible to snap a shot of the back of your head.

As you can see though, my ends are icky. I'm definitely trying to keep my length and I usually only get a trim every other time I get my hair colored. The texture of my hair is fine. I want it to GROOOOOOOOOW and be super long but it's just stuck at this blah phase. I've thought about taking Biotin, but I don't want to deal with a possible face breakout side effect. I have enough of that going on already.

So tell me, what are your tricks for keeping your hair healthy??

Try to Clear Scalp & Hair Beauty Therapy (http://www.clearhaircare.com/). I recently dyed my hair and have that brittle feeling. I'm more or a less a whatever shampoo is on sale type of girl, but I got this because I needed something to help after the dye. And I love it. It makes my hair feel so smooth and healthy. You can also look into an overnight conditioning at home treatment. I've done those before and they work really well.

Oo I can't wait to read the suggestions in your comments. My hair is awful!!! I will have to try the product up there and see if it helps!

I constantly cut my hair, which keeps the dead ends at bay and helps growth. But you should try a scalp massager as you shampoo your hair. It will stimulate the hair folicles and kinda wake them up to start growing better. When I go through my "grow out" phase, they've always helped me. Sally's Beauty Suuply has them in the brush aisle for cheap.

I hear that stuff is genius!!

My hair was a little shorter than yours when I started growing it out for my wedding and it was super frizzy. The first step is definitely avoiding heat styling as much as possible - so you're good there. I also started taking vitamins from a vita-pack - it had a multivitamin, fish oil, biotin/bcomplex and some other stuff. I am prone to breakouts but it hasn't affected me! And the best thing I did was get a keratin treatment and a trim. The keratin treatment seals the cuticle and prevents the ends from splitting. I could seriously go 3 months without getting a haircut. It made it so healthy and helped it grow so long! And moroccan oil is so great and you're using that too! I hope that helps!

Son of a gun, my hair is stuck in the EXACT same place. If you figure it out, let me know. I rock the weave because I can not, for the life of me, get my real hair to do anything!

Eat healthy protein and take biotin (at the drugstore) That's what I do! And I like my hair :)

My hair is a hot mess right now. I've been wanting to try that brand of shampoo and conditioner bc I've heard it's great but I'm waiting til the end of the month when I get my hair done. That way I can gauge if it really does work :)

Let me know how the suave keratin goes. I love it. I also pray my hair with a leave in conditioner. I can't let my hair airdry or it would be tragic for all involved. I also use the Aussie deeeep conditioner.

Redken All soft product works amazing on damaged hair!
And I find when I color my hair dark that it looks and feels 10x better than it does when I have bleach on my hair!!
Do you ever color your dark?
Try it! ;)

I have heard that the oil helps a ton but I haven't used it myself. I usually just make sure to put in a heat protect-ant before blow drying and only wash every other day. The natural oils are good for you locks :)

I have ridiculously thin/fine hair that is typically dry like straw.

I finally broke down and went to my dermatologist about the issue. The first thing she told me was to stop using sulfate shampoos and to start taking Biotin.

She also told me to cleanse and gently massage my scalp once a week with a cleansing/invigorating shampoo - like Tea Tree. Then to follow up with a scalp to tip deep conditioner.

At first the massive amounts of conditioner were weighting down my fine hair, but now it has balanced out.

I started this in November of last year and my hair grew over 4 inches by Valentines Day this year. Then I had I've been having to get bi-monthly trims since because my bangs are growing so fast!

I hope any bits of this helps you. :)

I try and not use heat products every day and let me hair air dry too on the weekends. My hair is the same freakin' way and it drives me nuts. Using a hair serum before you dry and flat iron helps tame the frizz and split ends a lot.

you need to get a treatment done & cool it with the heat tools right now. its messing up your hair. look into bumble & bumble products...theyre a little more pricey but should help.

I use the Organix Moroccan deep conditioner and I love it! Maybe that would help replenish your hair more than the oil? Love the color of your hair, btw!

I don't know about fixing the damage, and am interested to see what everyone says. But I would recommend some sort of heat protection for days you do heat style. I use a john Frieda heat protection/straightener thing that works well. Bonus, second day hair is a whole lot straighter so I don't have to go over it again.

Mine is so dry and brittle. I do love that dove spray leave in conditioner though.

I use biotin and I didn't break out,

So there's exactly 0% legit clinical evidence that biotin is related to breakouts in any way. On the other hand there's some good clinical evidence that it does in fact lead to healthier hair and nail growth. If you're still nervous about it, buy the pills in a 300 mcg dose and take only one a day for a month. This will do little for your hair, but it will tell you how you react to it. You'll need to take 3 of this dose a day for any results. I've been taking it for years (I have the most brittle hair and nails without it) and never had a problem with it.

Isn't that stuff amazing? I was buying an expensive oil until my hair stylist told me I could just buy this and save over 60. Usually my hair is never dry, but this summer the heat has taken a bit of a toll on it. xo

I try to wash my hair as little as possible, which can be a kind of yucky since I workout so much, but it really helps (dry shampoo and baby powder are my best friends). I also splurge on fancy shampoo from the salon. All the drug store brands can really dry out and wreck your hair!

I feel like my hair is the same way right now. I got a trim a month ago thinking it would cure all and it def did not! I feel your pain!!

Love everyone's comments! I'm loving the stuff that you won from Kelly at (MessyDirtyHair) cause I went out and bought some too...the little trial kit. So, when I was a bleached blonde, and having to get my hair re-bleached every 4-5 weeks I didn't take all that great care of my hair which I should've but anyways, it got messy and I had to start doing the deep conditioning treatments via my stylist. It wasn't as noticeable as a blonde but when I went back to being brunette, my hair was total crap. So every other time I got colored, I'd deep condition at the salon (and my stylist wouldn't charge me any different).
My hair would feel so much better afterwards.
I no longer color and try to get my ends trimmed every 6 weeks to get rid of the crap (cause now my hair is long and some of it is still left over blonde/brunette days...and I want my hair to stay long).
Okay, so that was lots of random info. ;) My point...trim your ends often (don't take length off...just trim) and deep condition. :)

try only washing your hair every other day or 2 and use dry shampoo or baby powder for the in-between days. also, i have used biotin for years and have never broken out. it's worth a shot. the aussie deep conditioner works well to use like once a week or so. your hair sounds a lot like mine!

So, I read your more recent posts about 2nd day hair, so that was my first suggestion! I recently just had to have a good 2 inches taken off my long hair, due to a long summer of overdue trims and beaches and pools and sun and styling. I try to take good care of it, but regular trims are important, especially if you use heat stylers (blow dry, curling wand, etc) I use Paul Mitchell heat protecting spray after every wash to help that. I also use the argan oil conditioner, and switch on and off every couple of washes with a lighter conditioner (awapui or whatever it's called by the same Organix brand) just because once your hair is damaged enough, those ends will need to be cut, and excessive conditioning will just make them greasy. So, try a good trim (split ends just break off, healthy hair will grow) and then maintain a good conditioning/less washing schedule. DON'T CONDITION YOUR ROOTS! Just the ends of your hair! COnditioning your roots will give you greasy hair.
